Adults usually take for granted that students go through stresses and hardships that may harm their mental health. Examples of these include adjusting to a new environment and social situations, bullying, or simply mental exhaustion from the heavy load of homework and projects.
Teachers can and should guide their struggling students and spot signs of mental and emotional distress, or even illnesses like depression. If you think any of your students is experiencing depression, look out for the following signs:
Decreased interest in activities
When they talk about their favorite activities, they don’t seem as joyful or interested as before.
Change in eating patterns
They might be eating a lot or not eating anything at all. This is one of the most noticeable signs that you need to keep an eye on.
Sudden changes in behavior
Students who are usually composed might burst out crying without any known reason. They might take it out on others, too. They can be angry or sad without any apparent reason.
Their failing grades might be a result of their waning interest in things. This might be a silent call for help.
If you notice any of these signs on your students, the best thing to do is talk to them. Listening might not accomplish everything, but it is a start. These kids need support now more than ever. Be there for them.
