The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) issued policies for drug testing among teachers, staff, and students.
In a DepEd Order last July 31, Education Secretary Leonor Briones gave the guidelines on authorizing drug tests for officials and employees, while Chairperson Patricia Licuanan issued a CHED Memoradum order that entails a drug testing requirement for admission or retention in colleges and universities.
Both figures of authority agree that implementing the drug testing policy is important in keeping a ‘drug-free environment’.
“Drug abuse is a complex and multi-faceted psycho-social problem with far-reaching adverse effects,” said Briones.
Ensuring the safety of the academic setting, Briones said that teachers who test positive for drug use will be restricted from handling all forms of activities involving students.
Substitute teachers will take their places respectively.
